The Origins
Zippers find their early origins in the 1850s as Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine, patented an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”. But the technology at the time was too primitive to make it commercially viable. It was only in 1913 that Gideon Sundback, an electrical engineer, created the first workable prototype which was known as the “Hookless Fastener No. 1”. By 1917, Sundback improved the design to make the modern zipper!
The Growth Spurt
By the 1930s, zippers began replacing buttons on trousers as they offered greater convenience and comfort. They were initially viewed with suspicion but eventually caught on widely. As materials evolved, zippers slimmed down from chunky brass teeth to lighter, molded plastic and nylon coils. New design variants like colored zippers and waterproof outdoor zippers also emerged. The zipper revolutionized fashion, finding its way onto jackets, footwear, accessories, luggage and beyond.
Ubiquitous Yet Underrated
Today, over 7 billion zippers are estimated to be manufactured annually. Yet this versatile fastening technology often operates behind the scenes, holding our daily ensembles together while escaping our attention.
